Why Purple Tea is special? 5 reasons…

1. A Brand New Tea Experience

Purple Tea is a completely new category in tea! Make room Black, Green, Oolong… Purple Tea has arrived!

2. The Only Tea That Changes Colour

Purple Tea is a colour changing tea! Due to the high content of antioxidants in the tea, the steeped liquor changes colour when you add a couple drops of lemon to it. This lemon magic turns it into a bright pinky/purple hue in a reaction to the anthocyanin pH indicators in the tea.

3. Great Health Benefits

Purple Tea is low in caffeine and the tea is very clean. Purple leaves flourish naturally on the equator in Kenya, no chemicals are ever sprayed on the leaves and pesticides are strictly forbidden.

This vibrant tea is the only tea to contain anthocyanins, the same super-antioxidants that are found in other purple plants. The Tea Reasearch Foundation of Kenya has stated that Purple Tea has more antioxidant activity then Green or Black tea! The powerful anthocyanins that cause the beautiful purple leaf, are shared by other anthocyanin-antioxidant rich fruits like blueberries and pomegranate, which have been found to lower cholesterol, improve immune health, and help as a natural anti-inflammatory.

4. Supports Small-Scale Tea Farmers

By being fairly-traded and farmer-direct, drinking JusTea’s Purple Leaf Tea directly benefits Kenyan farming families. We work with small-scale tea farmers, providing new opportunities for sustainable growth and employment for their families and communities with a focus on ethical, natural, quality tea.

Why is it Purple?

Purple Leaf Tea is a cultivar of Camellia Sinensis (species) Assamica (varietal). The reason it is called Purple Tea is because the bushes naturally grow purple leaves in Kenyan tea gardens. This is not a GMO plant; it is completely natural and part of the tea family (Camellia Sinensis Assamica).  The reason the leaves are purple is because they contain the super antioxidants: Anthocyanins.   These are the same antioxidants that make other plants purple: like our favourite grapes, blueberries, pomegranates, and acai berries.

Over 25 years ago, the Tea Research Foundation of Kenya (TRFK) developed this new Purple cultivar and small-scale Kenyan farmers planted the seedlings in 2011. As a part of Purple Tea’s history, JusTea is introducing this unique tea experience to the world through efforts to promote the Kenyan’s local farmers sustainability. With ethical fair trade practice and the ability to reach new markets, the Kenyan farmers have the an opportunity to provide us with the highest quality, non-GMO, pesticide/chemical free, Purple Tea leaves available!
