Speranza is a founding member of the Kenyan Women’s Tea Co-op. After 25 years of farming, picking, and processing organic herbs, she is now the production manager. With her sustainable income, she has been able to purchase a home with a garden. Speranza told us that she once travelled to Italy, but left hungry… the food portions were just too small in comparison to Kenya!
Florence has a big smile and brings a lot of joy to the Kenyan Women’s Tea Co-op. She is the agricultural manager and trains the local small-scale farmers how to grow organic herbs. Press play on Florence’s favourite Bongo song and you will likely catch her dancing.
Karimi is the quality control manager at the Kenyan Women’s Tea Co-op. She carefully checks all production steps to ensure the organic herbs are of the highest quality. Karimi is proud of her work and how the Women’s Co-op directly supports her local community.
These herbal teas taste better because of our committed relationship to the farmers. All herbs are hand-picked and produced without massive machinery, slowing down the processing and allowing you to taste the high-quality of hand-crafted tea.
These teas come direct from the farmer, there are no middleman stops along the journey, meaning you get a fresher cup of tea and the farmer receives a fair-wage.

Spice up your life with a cup of Lemon Ginger. Zingy bold ginger and sweet citrusy lemongrass create a perfectly balanced flavour. This immunity-boosting blend also helps soothe a sore throat.
Feel a burst of joy with a cup of Hibiscus Glow. Vibrant pink hibiscus flowers steep a beautiful cup of tea, with a bright tart taste and sweet finish. This antioxidant-rich tea is also super refreshing over ice!
Let me take you on a trip to Meru, Kenya. There is no flight to Meru so you have to travel by bus or car to the rural and remote area just east of Mt Kenya. The region is very dry and often experiences severe drought. There is little support from the government and aid organizations, very basic infrastructure and primarily subsistence farming.
It was 10 years ago that we first travelled 9 hours by Mutatu (local bus) to the Women’s Co-op and met Speranza. She is a grandmother who is a foot and a half shorter than me and has the warmest smile. Speranza shared with me how her employment at the Co-op has allowed her to pay for her grand-childrens school fees. She mentors young girls in the community and helps provide employment at the Co-op for women who have physical disabilities and can’t find work elsewhere.
JusTea has partnered with Speranza, Karimi, Florence, and the Women’s Co-op for over a decade. The Women’s co-op has become a pillar in the greater community. They grow the only organic certified herbal teas in Kenya and provide employment to over 80 families and hundreds of farmers in the region. The current unemployment rate for women in Kenya is 40.3% (twice as much as men), these jobs are so precious!
To be honest, it isn’t easy working in Kenya, which is why no other North American tea company partners with this Women’s Co-op. It is much easier to just source herbs from Egypt where the pricing is lower, there aren’t daily power outages, and they have automated machinery. But when I travel to Kenya each year and walk the lemongrass and hibiscus gardens with Speranza, Karimi and Florence, it reaffirms in me that what we are doing is special and the impact is real.
